What a Medicare agent actually does
A licensed Medicare agent helps Ohio residents:
- Compare available Medicare Advantage, Medigap, and Part D plans in your county
- Verify your doctors and prescriptions are covered by plans you're considering
- Handle enrollment paperwork and submit applications
- Review your coverage annually during AEP
- Help with claims questions and coverage issues throughout the year
The agent is paid commission by the carrier when you enroll. The cost to you is zero. Agents earn the same regardless of which plan you choose (with narrow exceptions), so a good independent agent has no financial incentive to push you toward a specific carrier.
How to find one in Ohio
- MedicareAgents.com — our partner directory of licensed Medicare agents. Search by ZIP code; see agent profiles and carrier appointments before reaching out.
- OhioMedicare.org's Find an Agent page — walks through what to look for in a good Medicare agent and how to interview them.
- Ohio Department of Insurance license lookup — verify any agent's license status before working with them.
- Word-of-mouth — ask friends, family, neighbors, or your primary care office.
Questions to ask before working with any Medicare agent
- Are you independent or captive? Independent agents represent multiple carriers; captive agents represent one. Independent usually = more options.
- Which carriers are you appointed with? Get the list. If they're appointed with only one or two, they can show you only those plans.
- How do you get paid? The honest answer is "commission from the carrier when you enroll, and a smaller annual renewal commission for as long as you stay on the plan."
- Will you do an annual review during AEP? The right answer is yes, and the agent should reach out to you proactively each fall.
- Are you licensed in Ohio? Verify on the Ohio Department of Insurance license lookup.
- How will you communicate with me? Some agents prefer phone, others meet in person or by video. Pick what works for you.
Red flags to avoid
- Cold-calling sales pitches that pressure you to enroll immediately
- Promises of specific benefits without first reviewing your situation
- Anyone who asks for payment up front — Medicare agents are paid by carriers, not by you
- Door-to-door Medicare sales (illegal under CMS marketing rules)
- Any agent who doesn't ask about your specific doctors and medications
